• “There really is no individual. We’re all just one. And when you realize that, you’re free to just be as you are, to just do as you do.” Spiritual stuff like this flows freely from the soulful depths of Te’devan, a nomadic wanderer we ran into (were drawn to?) at Sundance last month. It’s hard not to: he’s 6’7”, wears kaleidoscopic ponchos and paint-splashed skinny jeans — free from a girl who couldn’t sell them off at Buffalo Exchange — and breaks into spontaneous dance whenever music enters the scene. Te’devan was born in New York, honed his intellect at the University of Michigan, and currently calls Austin, TX, his home (his girlfriend lives there).

For the majority of the year, though, Te’devan’s always roving — his earthly possessions fit into a tiny duffle bag. He spends his days making new acquaintances, traipsing about festivals, and enlightening conversations — and his nights on friends’ floors and couches. He meditates daily (three to five hours), and tries to bring light to everyone he meets.  ”It’s like, right now we’re looking at gun control, but really what we need to look at is mind control. It’s about finding balance. You know?”

Note: He’s at SXSW, if you’re looking for some awesome, deep discussions.

The duo — Tacoma, WA native Molly Hamilton and Chicagoan Rob Earl Thomas — relayed their thoughts on the perfect hot dog (hint: cream cheese plays a role), what it was like recording Almanac in woodsy upstate New York, and prepping for their upcoming world tour. High five indeed!

  • I Am Writing This Blog Post for Free

    veblenesquegorge:

I’m sure by now every freelance writer in America has read the post by Nate Thayer documenting his exchange with an editor at The Atlantic, who asked him to write 1,200 words for free. It looked completely familiar to me. Examples: I’ve let the Huffington Post, against every fiber of my being, reprint materials I’ve written for other publications for free; The New York Times asked me to blog about the 2008 Winter Olympics for free (I’m a former competitive figure skater, so came not only with the writing chops, but also expert knowledge of that event’s most popular sport). I can say that the HuffPo editors are shameless on this front. The New York Times editor was not, and I appreciated it, even though I declined the “work.”

  • Last night, we took over The Smile To Go while coffee maverick Mike Breach showed us caffeine magic. For him, espresso-filled ceramic cups are the canvas, frothy milk the palette, and bamboo toothpicks the brushes. While filming, we drew some iconic New York faces, ate banana cardamom bread and maple date corn muffins, and drank too much espresso. Hooray!

  • Editorial concept test! A series of animated GIFs bringing signature meme-ish characters to life. Here we have an experiment with Live Pusheen, featuring allegedly real humans imitating Pusheen’s signature cute pulsing in their own unique ways. The players: Mackenzie, Ben, Steve, Megan, Topher, Chris, Sean, Jessica & Sky.
