Gracias Tumblr

How Tumblr Changed My Life - guettabergling

Okay.
Some months ago, I created my blog and one of the blogs I was following at these time posted a song: Fade into Darkness by Avicii.
I started to find more about Avicii. And here, on Tumblr, I found a blog (avicii-loves-me) and finally, I loved him.
Two months ago I knew that he will come to Mexico! I found anyway to get some tickets, so I knew that here, on Tumblr, a junk food company was giving some free VIP tickets with Meet and Greet for Avicii’s gig!
I was participating in the contest, and one day before the gig I knew that I won the contest.
And I will meet Avicii, who is actually my 2nd favorite DJ.
It was really amazing, the best thing what could happens to me!
And I met Avicii. You can see my photos at my blog.
So, I’m really thankfully with you Tumblr. Without you, I’d never met one of my idols,
I love internet, but the most amazing thing would happen there is TUMBLR.<3

How Tumblr Changed My Life - fuckyeahbookarts

by fuckyeahbookarts

I started my book arts and design course in 2010, but since nobody I met ever understood what the field of ‘book arts’ actually entailed, I decided to make a blog I could direct people to. I never expected more than a handful of people to follow, but a year and 30,000 followers later, I’m continually bowled over by the sheer enthusiasm and positive feedback of the tumblr community, so rarely found on the internet these days. As things become more complicated in my personal life (‘oh my god why am I studying art I might as well start living on the streets now’ kinda thing) my blog became both a refuge and a reminder of why I chose the path I did.

Through the rising success of the blog, I’ve had the opportunity network with best-selling writers, established artists, and best of all are the daily messages I receive from young students saying how much the blog has inspired and encouraged their own artistic endeavours. Last year, tumblr additionally scouted me out to work for the site as a crafts editor, where I research and promote fresh talent on a daily basis. Helping such gifted artists gain well-deserved recognition is always a good feeling. I don’t know where my degree will take me, but I know the blog has given me the confidence to know that my passion matters. Viva la book arts!

Tumblr has changed my life in many ways. my life was so boring and blue because i have basically no friends irl. so basically outside of school i just sat around on the computer or drew or something, nothing fascinating. i thought and i still think i look pretty good but in school people used to say i looked ugly or like a crazy lady because my hair was so long and frizzy and curly and i didnt like my hair so wild but there was nothing i could do about it. after i got a tumblr i noticed how so many pretty people had short hair, and it gave me an idea. after a couple of days pestering my mom to bring me to supercuts i donated 15 inches of hair to locks of love. shortly after with my new short doo people said it fit me alot better and i got a ton of compliments irl and on tumblr. i could imagine people i know irl saying i looked better cus they had to witness my bad hair everyday but when i posted the before and afters people said i looked adorable in both, which really got my korokoro a doking. also i now have many tumblr friends and i even met some of them irl and it was lots of fun being able to be with people who actually liked the same things as me and appreciated me.
so tumblr has given me…
-confidence
-short pretty hair
-friends
-told me about homestuck
-1000+ followers
-compliments
-good memories
id say thats alot from just 7 months of blogging. vuv

How Tumblr Changed My Life - zimothy

Well, I wasn’t really a huge writer until I got into the XMFC fandom, and I saw all of these amazing fanfic authors and I wanted to write like them. I write a lot, but I never dedicated myself to a fandom until I came to tumblr. My number of followers skyrocketed in the past year and I have met so many amazing people who have helped me improve my writing, as well as helped me cope with moving from Florida to Indiana on my own, and dealing with depression and other serious issues in my life. Tumblr’s XMFC fandom is what really made me think that my writing was worth something, and its helped kick me in the pants to get more and more done and I’m grateful for every single one of my followers for helping me through every difficult time.
I’ve even had a few who sent me grocery store giftcards or care packages and stuff like that on the weeks that we could barely make rent and had no food in our home.

How Tumblr Changed My Life - marylily2

When I was first harassed about getting a tumblr, I had no idea what to expect. I thought it seemed nice to share your favourite pictures with people who also shared your passions and interests, but I had no idea just how much of an impact tumblr would leave.

It’s not just a place to share your pictures, your videos, your quotes and your ideas… it’s a place to truly let rip and express yourself.

Just yesterday, someone reblogged something on my dashboard that said ‘reblog if your tumblr represents who you are.’ And I realised at that moment, that that’s just it. Tumblr represents each individual’s unique personalities. Just like finger prints, no two tumblrs are the same.

Tumblr enables endless creativity whether it’s from picking a fancy URL to using it as an opportunity to network your various talents.

And if all of that isn’t enough, somehow you can leave all the drama of Facebook and Twitter behind. Yes, there is an ‘ask box’ option but that is a personal choice that can easily be avoided. There is also the brilliance of the ‘fanmail’ option enabling limitless characters for messaging away until your heart is content.

The thing I love most of all about tumblr though, is that it’s a community. It’s like a giant family. When you search a ‘tag’ of something you love, it’s incredibly easy to find like-minded people who then end up becoming life long friends. Not to mention the hilarious tumblr lingo. It’s as if we’re a secret society all coming together on one big site.

There is just about a tumblr for everything, no matter what it is you’re into, once you find the right blogs, you’re good to go. And that is precisely why I could never be away from tumblr. It keeps me current and up to date with everything I love. Whether it’s my favourite tv shows, books, video games and music, to funny animals, yummy food and inspirational tales.

Tumblr is also a great way to make things viral. Just last week my cat went missing and after posting 3 pictures of him accompanied by a piece of short text, I had hundreds of reblogs from strangers all over the world wanting to help me find my lost cat. Tumblr really brings out the best in people and demonstrates how compassionate this world can be.

For me personally, I think tumblr has been such a great kick up the bum to encourage me to write more. As an aspiring writer, I often find myself clogged with writer’s block, but with a social networking site right there every day, it’s helped to give me that much needed boot. What’s more is I can then share my work and get critique, not just from tumblr friends but from any strangers who happen to stumble upon it and it’s really helped improve my work.

Overall, tumblr has personally impacted my life for countless reasons. It’s fun, it’s unique, it’s simple, it’s accessible and it’s just one of the hugest parts of my life. I’ll never stop expressing gratitude for the friend who encouraged me to get into tumblr in the first place, and I would happily recommend it to anyone.

How Tumblr Changed My Life - alternrg

by alternrg

Tumblr is more than I ever imagined it would be in part due to a lack of awareness for these instantaneous distance barrier breaking tools. I don’t remember who finally convinced me to start a Facebook account but was late to the party, my MO. Unless I discover a bit of humor in the mundane, I’m more apt to call my friends there rather than post it on the wall but in thinking about it, there is a time component to these tools. If Facebook is the place to share what we did, and Twitter to share what we are doing, Tumblr is both of those while providing the space, big operative word there SPACE to work through what we are going to do. How many times have we been told to write down our goals for success, the more specific the better? I’ve done so and managed to follow through on some of the commitments I’ve made to myself on paper but for some reason, exposing visions on Tumblr provides greater return on those thoughts. Maybe it’s the combination of media or being connected to people who are similarly crazy but since being drawn to this vortex and it is a vortex, I’ve pushed my own boundaries that much more.  In addition to a refined sense of motivation, being exposed and participating in topically focused conversation has filled a void that has existed since completing those first graduate level seminar courses in college. Now I see endless opportunity to participate in developing media that fosters these types of bonds between thinking people.

So that’s what Tumblr has become and I have John Mayer’s irresistible invitation at the end of April of 2010 to honor for it. Just weeks before, I was standing in the front row at the winter tour closer conversing with a young man who made the suggestion quite loudly to follow John’s tweets. I had read a couple of them already in attempt to figure out what the heck it was for but played along as though I wouldn’t even consider going down that road and responded at an equally audible decibel. Within 48 hours I forwarded an event proposal to John’s management outlining a benefit for water awareness at Millennium Park and I’m getting closer to making this happen I can feel it. Before that show, I had never considered doing anything like what I’ve described but something happened that night and Tumblr has been the perfect venue for documenting the residual effect of inspiration. Beyond this focus, there’s a recurring theme in the conversation attempting to address the benefit of physical distance at the onset of a new relationship, in this case to document concurrent thoughts of which have a dedicated tag. I’m not sure how many occurrences are required to substantiate the possibility that our thoughts really do matter but the opportunity would not exist as far as I can see if it weren’t for the imagination and endeavor of Tumblr staff.

Worth sharing  is that I reserved the domain ametalovestory.com and just haven’t decided when to migrate from the Tumblr url. alternrg I dreamt up years ago and thought it was perfect until I googled it around six months after starting this account to find that it’s the name of a company. If you would like to use this project for storyboard and require that the name be changed, I have ametalovestory.tumblr.com as well. In any case, I think it would be cool for alternrg (the company) to use Tumblr for explaining their technology in small doses to the scientifically curious. Turning waste into energy. Did you ever think that would happen in our lifetime?

How Tumblr Changed My Life - alleynomi

Tumblr is my therapist, my lover, my drug, my muse.  I have started to write again because of tumblr.  I can’t wait to get home after work, get on the computer and pour out all my emotions into a post.
When I wake up in the mornings and before I go to bed at night, I scroll aimlessly through my dashboard and I truly love all my followers, they are my best friends.
I even wrote a commercial promoting my tumblr:

WHEN PEOPLE DON’T LIKE MY TUMBLR POSTS
I feel unhappy. When I feel unhappy, I go to happy hour. When I go to happy hour, I’m up for anything. When I’m up for anything I head to seedy places. When I head to seedy places, I meet up with other people who are up for anything.  When I meet other people who are up for anything, I re-enact sex scenes from funny movies.  Don’t let me re-enact sex scenes from funny movies!  Like my tumblr posts!

I love you, tumblr!  You rule.

Who knows how we originally started following each other on Tumblr (I remember Andrea posting awesome mixes and music recommendations). We were reblogging each other’s posts a lot when one day we decided to start an email conversation and eventually became internet pen pals! We didn’t actually hang out in real life until March 2010 when Andrea was visiting NYC. After corresponding over the internet and ultimately running a blog together for a year or two before meeting in real life, it wasn’t that odd to finally meet and everything came easy. Then, a few months later, Meg went to visit SF and we got to hang out again. We went from not meeting each other for a few years, to hanging out twice in one year! So, we’re pretty lucky considering we live on opposite sides of the country (Meg in Brooklyn, Andrea in San Fran).

Got a Girl Crush was born out of g-chat conversation with Andrea (andreainspired.tumblr.com) while I (totes.tumblr.com) was on a red-eye flight from LA to NYC  in 2009. It just seemed to make sense to start a tumblr together since we had the same tastes and admirations. Initially it was just a mutual catch-all blog. We never imagined it’d reach the status it has now (a blog and now a bi-annual print magazine—issue 2 coming out in June 2012!). We love having a place to showcase women we admire and spread some of those positive vibes.

Having an “internet friend” used to be almost some sort of dirty secret 10 years ago, but now I couldn’t imagine not having the blog, zine, or west coast taste twin.

I met a girl through Tumblr. I was a fan of her blog, she was a fan of mine. I lived in Los Angeles, she lived in Brooklyn. We started messaging. Then emailing. Then texting. Then video chatting. Then we met. One and a half long-distance years later, she showed up at my doorstep in LA and asked me to marry her.

We would never have met if it weren’t for Tumblr.

How Tumblr Changed My Life - kyerabianca

My mom (thelmabee.tumblr.com) introduced me to Tumblr. Yep, my mom. I was a 17 year-old living in Manila, Philippines totally content with being on MySpace when, one day, she told me about some blogging site that was, and I quote, “going to be the next big thing.” I checked it out and quickly signed up. My first username was forkeeps.

In the latter part of 2007, my mom felt the need to move back to the US. I was uprooted from all I knew and transplanted into a totally different country and culture. My Tumblr was there throughout the depression I went through during the transition. It was there to help me keep in touch with my friends in Manila and it introduced me to wonderful people I now consider friends (even if we haven’t met in person). My Tumblr was there during my time living in Orlando, FL and my move to Nashville, TN.
My Tumblr was there throughout my relationship with my ex. And it’s still there now that I’m in a good and stable relationship with a man who just joined the Army. On Tumblr, I have an instant support system just by tracking the “military” tag. My Tumblr has been there through ups and downs.

However, I’m going to have to admit, there was a bit of a falling out when Tumblarity came around. I may have attempted to blog somewhere else, but I quickly realized that Tumblr really is home.
My Tumblr is home to who I was, who I am now, and who I one day hope to be.

I won’t say Tumblr changed my life, but I will say that Tumblr helps me through life.

Thank you for all you do. Thank you.

How Tumblr Changed My Life - guitarmanjb

For most of my life, I’ve struggled with anxiety, particularly about new experiences (new schools, moving to a new state, etc.) But I didn’t realize how bad my anxiety could get until the countdown to college began.
Around the same time, I started using tumblr more regularly and have made some incredibly close friends, closer than people I know in real life (and some of these friends I’ve ended up meeting in real life). When I moved to LA for school, I spent a lot of time on tumblr, because it was like a second home. I could interact with friends and, thanks to the app, I could take those friends with me wherever, so that if I was ever freaking out about being far from home, I had tumblr in my pocket to keep me sane and grounded. And being part of a close-knit community of like-minded people has made me feel less alone in the world, and therefore less anxious.

How Tumblr Changed My Life - learntolikeit

My best friend Amy lives nearly 100 miles away, and without Tumblr, I would not be able to talk to her on a daily basis and I am pretty sure I would go a little insane from my boredom.

Amy & I lived together for 2 years in university, and since moving out and graduating 8 months ago, we have had our own Tumblr blog to keep up with each others crazy lives. I have moved twice and have a full time job, and she has been planning her wedding. We also both have other halves who also demand our attention. With Tumblr however, we are able to take some time out of our day, and just keep sane by sharing very funny and often weird things each other.

Tumblr has changed my life because without it, I would not be able to share my obsession of all things Harry Potter / animal funny / Buffy related with my Amy, and she would not be able to show me pictures of her current Tumblr crushes (the most recent being Michael Fassbender).

Amy is the Sirius to my Remus, the Frodo to my Samwise and the Jimmy to my Richard and Tumblr is our Hogwarts, Hobbiton and Boardwalk. The best thing of all is, that no matter what we post to each other or on our own blogs, the Tumblr community will always get our references, and will never judge us for our zaniness. Thank you Tumblr, for my best friend.

How Tumblr Changed My Life - tomorrowisperfect

I have always been so alone. Always searching for someone to talk to. Anyone at all. Any willing, trusting person but out here in this little old town in Ontario, not one person seems to be trustworthy. Here, on tumblr, everyone seems to be ready to listen. Most smart people here have always said ‘Talk to me if you need help. I dont carer who you are, come talk to me.”  Not only that, but i’ve always had trouble expressing myself. I would stay up for hours past my bed time (insomniac :/) trying to draw, write or play a song but nothing worked but with the aid of other peoples photos, quotes, videos and little thoughts i have been able to express my lonelyness here in this great world. As my final point, i have always been larger. Getting upset when one pair of jeans wouldnt fit or when some group of kids would give me a odd look but after seeing that i am not alone (help to blogs about larger girls) i am slowly learning to appreciate my size. And that even if HE doesnt, some other person does.

How Tumblr Changed My Life - dailyoddcompliment

by dailyoddcompliment

Nine months ago, I created the Tumblr blog, “Daily Odd Compliment.” To date, it is the smartest decision I’ve ever made. With only one unique post a day from Monday thru Friday, this blog was able to reach 1,000 followers in six months and 2,000 followers in eight months. But it’s not the amount of followers that’s made an impact on me; it’s the interaction with my followers that’s changed my life.

It seems funny to say, but joining Tumblr has made me a better person. With followers messaging me to “brighten up [their] day” or give them advice, I’ve completely changed my writing persona. I’m naturally somewhat of a smartass, who can easily make fun of a situation, but now I’m viewed as the nice guy on the internet.

Instead of making fun of celebrities all the time, I’m passing out bear hugs to people I’ve never met before, and I’m pretty sure I have at least 12 Tumblr wives now. And it’s awesome. Because my followers are wonderful and I love interacting with them.

Thanks to Tumblr, I’m more creative, more responsive, and just a better person. Basically, it’s the first time in my life where I’m legitimately proud of what I do.

Below is a link to a video I made that pretty much sums up “Daily Odd Compliment.”
